First employees at UCT to be in-sourced from 1 July

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced that hundreds of previously contracted staff will be insourced from July.

This follows an agreement signed with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union in October last year.

It comes after protests against insourcing at various universities broke out last year and early this year.

The agreement was signed following a wave of student and worker protests at UCT and nationally, for lower fees and for insourcing workers.

In a statement, UCT Vice-Chancellor Max Price says the employees, who will be insourced, have been contracted to the university on a full time basis by six companies.

Price has explained that staff from C3 food services will only be insourced when their contract ends in 2019, unless an earlier date is agreed to.

UCT says extended consultations with unions addressed grievances around insourcing, which include employee compensation and benefits.

They eventually inked an agreement this month.
