Stellies installs fire prevention & detection measures

The University of Stellenbosch say fire prevention and detection measures have been implemented across its campus. The implementation follows the fire that gutted the Van der Sterr building in a blaze last weekend.

This is the fourth building that has been affected by a fire at the university since 2007.

While some Maties stood staring at the fire-damaged building, the university's Susan van der Merwe explains firewalls and smoke alarms have been installed in many of the old buildings.

“We've installed roof fire mitigation measures because these buildings are quite old.”

More than 2,500 students who attended lectures in the Van de Sterr building have had to be accommodated elsewhere.

Some lectures were disrupted this week mainly affecting the School of Accounting.

A forensic investigation is expected to be wrapped up in the next few days.
