Student accommodation a top priority

Blade Nzimande says plans are underway to build additional capacity at tertiary institutions.

While the Department of Higher Education has acknowledged there is a significant lack of student accommodation, it says plans are underway to build additional capacity at tertiary institutions.
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande spoke in Pretoria on Monday, shortly before universities and other training institutions start the year.
The department’s Mahlubi Mabizela says the accommodation budget over the last three years has been prioritised to help previously disadvantaged pupils.
“The department allocated R1.6 billion for the construction of student accommodation at universitiesand has established 9,000 beds and additional accommodation.”
Nzimande says a student accommodation policy seeks to prioritise placement of first year students.
“If we can use accommodation creatively by supporting especially first year students, we will be able to make a difference.”
One fifth of students requiring accommodation are catered for by the institutions.
