Recognising staff loyalty and dedication

MORE than 100 UNIZULU employees were honoured at the Long Service Awards last week.
Among those honoured, at the event held at King Bhekuzulu Hall, was Patrick Mdlalose from Protective Services.  With 40 years of service under his belt, Mdlalose was the longest serving employee honoured at the event.

Speaking before the event Mdlalose said while UNIZULU has had its fair share of challenges in the past it remains a great place to work at, and added that he would encourage other people to come work for the institution.

Vice Chancellor, Professor Fikile NM Mazibuko paid tribute to all the Long Service Awards recipients emphasising that all the staff members irrespective of their field of work, were an important part of the university. “All of us are part of the subsystems that make the system that is the university to work. We are all building blocks of the university,” she said.

The main speaker at the event, Dr Nhlanhla Sibeko, the Manager of uMhlathuze Municipality, had earlier expressed similar sentiments.   “UNIZULU is what it is today because of you collectively. We can make this a better place for all of us.”  Dr Sibeko urged UNIZULU staff to continue serving the university with integrity.  “All it takes is each and everyone of us doing what we promised to do. All of us made a promise when we came her. If you are an academic you made a promise to teach and publish so do that.  If you are at PSD you made a promise to protect the university, so do that”.
Speaking on behalf of the long service awards recipients Mathula Ngwenya said staff employed by UNIZULU had love for the university and for the region and they continue to serve out of love “not because we can’t be employed elsewhere”. He urged the executive to attend to some of the labour issues.

Prof Mazibuko thanked all the award recipients for the hard work and commitment to the university.  She assured staff present that all the challenges that they are facing are being addressed. “Thank you for being with this university through times of joy and through times of pain,” Prof Mazibuko said.
