NMMU installs solar charging stations

In a first for the Bay, shiny new mobile solar charging stations have just been installed on Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University campuses.

Embracing NMMU’s value of “respect for the natural environment”, these charging stations each have the capacity to charge 72 cell phones at once – just using the power of the sun.

With 15 stations on the university’s South, North, Second Avenue, Missionvale and George campuses, in areas easily accessible and convenient, students can pop their phones on the unit where they will charge at the same rate as using a computer or a car cigarette lighter.

The stations require six hours of direct sunlight to fully charge their batteries and can continue to give charge for seven hours without any sun at all.

By the end of the year, tablet docking stations will also be added to the units.
