Rooftop garden at Mangosuthu University

The first harvest of a rooftop garden at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in KZN has been collected.

The garden was established by the Department of Agriculture last year and is situated on the roof of the natural science laboratory. The VC requested about a year ago that the garden be used for edible plants. Nhlakanipho Mavundla, a former Community Extension student, started the project from scratch, and looked after the garden even during the December holidays. He planted miellies, green pepper, spinach, chillies, and onions. Tholi Cele, one of the lecturers said as a department they were very happy to see the project doing so well. “We hope to see many more of such projects where space is maximised for food production,” Tholi said.
