Universities in Kenya told to generate own funds

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has said public universities should look for alternative sources of money. He said they should stop relying on government funds for development.

Kaimenyi said that the government will not be able to meet the institutions' demands because the university education budget is limited. He said chancellors should work with various university councils’ to explore ways of investing and earning money.

Kaimeny said this will ensure studies continues uninterrupted at the institutions of higher learning since the government had financed their foundation.

The directive was contained in a statement read on his behalf by the assistant director of higher learning Milton Njuki during the Laikipia University's first graduation ceremony in Nyahururu on Friday.
